Abstract

The research aimed to study the extent of farmers ’knowledge in olive production techniques, harvesting techniques and beyond for the olive harvest, and to study the extent of farmers’ knowledge of the indicative and marketing information provided to the crop and its sources and the extent of application of that knowledge, in addition to studying the communication between farmers and extension units and knowledge of the indicative and marketing information they provide Extension units for farmers in the area. The research included 217 farmers from the regions of Lattakia and Al-Haffah in the governorate of Lattakia. The results showed that the degree of farmers ’knowledge of olive production techniques was 67.3% of the farmers, the degree of their knowledge was moderate, 17.1% the degree of their knowledge was good, while 15.7% had weak knowledge, and the degree of their application of that knowledge was at a rate of 46.5% medium and 45.2% weak. As for the degree of farmers ’knowledge of harvesting techniques and beyond, 58.1% of farmers have an average degree of knowledge in harvesting techniques and beyond, 30.4% have poor knowledge, while 11.5% have good knowledge, and the degree of their application was 53% medium and 39.2% weak. . The level of implementation of the extension and marketing activities was weak with regard to harvest dates and very weak with regard to marketing channels and market prices. 73.7% of the extension workers do not visit the farmers in their fields, and the largest percentage of farmers do not communicate at all or adequately with the extension agents, 24.4% of the farmers do not visit the extension unit at all, and 24% visit it once a year. The largest percentage of farmers, at 63.1%, depend on the most experienced farmers for agricultural information and guidance.
