Background & Objective: Pain and discomfort are side effects during orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to compare levels of pain and discomfort using removable mandibular retractor and lower clear plate intermaxillary traction appliances during the orthodontic treatment of skeletal class III in late mixed dentition.
Materials & Methods: The study included 30 patients with skeleltal class III malocclusion who were treated with the removable mandibular retractor and lower clear plate inter maxillary traction appliances. Pain and discomfort were assessed using a questionnaires with numeric rating scale consisted of 6 questions related to:(1)Tension and pressure on the oral soft tissues,(2) pain,(3) impaired speech,(4)impaired swallowing,(5) restriction of oral movements,(6) lack of confidence in public at the following assessment times:(T1) 24 hours,(T2)1 week,(T3)6 weeks,(T4) 3 months.
Results: The levels of pain decrease significantly at (T4).The levels of impaired speech, impaired swallowing, restrict, lack of confidence decrease significantly at (T2 (in the removable mandibular retractor group.Whereas the levels of pressure, pain, impaired of swallowing, restrict decrease significantly at (T2). The levels of impaired of swallowing and lack of confidence were low in general in the lower clear plate intermaxillary traction group.
Conclusion: The removable mandibular retractor and the lower clear plate intermaxillary traction appliances are well accepted by skeletal classIII patients.
