The Extent of English Language Teachers' possession of the Technical Competencies that professionalism requires at the State Schools of Damascus

Abstract

This research aimed to identify English  LanguageTeachers' possession of the technical competencies  that professionalism requires at the State Schools of Damascus. The researcher used a questionnaire consisted of (42 items) with afive-point scale (strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree) in order to assess the degree of English language teachers' possession of the technical competencies  that professionalism requires. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were tested by using appropriate procedures. The application of Cronbach Alpha formula indicated that the reliability coefficient of the questionnaire as a whole was (0.85). The questionnaire was applied to a sample of /60/ male and female English language teachers in the Directorate of Education in Damascus, It was drawn in a systematic random manner (from the four educational districts in Damascus). The sample amounted to /10%/ of the original population: The results showed low scores for estimating the possession of the technical competencies required for the apprenticeship of education among a sample of English language teachers in the schools of the city of Damascus, as the average estimate was (2.55) out of a maximum score of 5, in all domains.

The results showed low scores for estimating the possession of the technical competencies required for apprenticeship in education among a sample of English language teachers in the schools of the city of Damascus, as the average estimate was (2.55) out of a maximum score of 5, in all fields.

The study revealed a low estimation regarding the degree of English language teachers' possession of the technical competencies. The mean score of teachers' responses was (2.55) out of (5) in all domains as a whole. In the light of the previous results, the researcher recommends developing the technical contents in educational preparation and training programs for English language teachers, as required by the professionalism of education in all fields. Paying attention to the professional development of in- srevice English language teachers especially in the field of research and publishing, and adopting it in their promotions.
