Maladaptive behaviors exhibited by individuals with autism spectrum disorder in special education centers in the city of Damascus

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate some maladaptive behaviors among individuals with autism spectrum disorder who are present in special education centers in the city of Damascus. And detecting the degree level of these behaviors according to the variables of (gender, age, years of rehabilitation, degree of autism, functional speech). The research sample included (148) individuals, (26) females and (122) males. A scale was built to measure the maladaptive behaviors displayed by these individuals, which is answered by teachers of individuals with autism spectrum disorder in special education centers, which consists of (56) items divided into four dimensions: (aggressive behaviors, routine behaviors, social behaviors, and sensory behaviors). The results of the research showed that the level of maladaptive behaviors fell at the average level, and the results showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the level of maladaptive behaviors according to the gender variable, while the differences were statistically significant in the rest of the variables in favor of both older individuals, those with a severe degree of autism, and those with years of age.
