The Column on the Last Page in Tishreen and Al Watan Newspapers An Analytical Study

Abstract

The study aims at analyzing the contents of the columns on the last page in Tishreen and AlWatan local newspapers, identifying the topics and their types and techniques of writing, and comparing the results between these newspapers.

The study uses the content analysis tool through a comprehensive inventory of the columns on the last page in both newspapers (53 columns).

The results of the study show the superiority of the Tishreen Newspaper in the number of columns published on the last page compared to Al Watan Newspaper. In addition, cultural and social issues took the lead, opinion columns were similar, the sources of writing the columns in both newspapers were also similar, and there was a lack of variety of techniques of writing the columns on the last pages of both newspapers since columnists adopted clear orientations towards their topics.

The study recommends increasing the number of newspaper columnists on the last page, especially in Al-Watan Newspaper, relying on specialized  and non-local columnists, and diversifying the types of columns and writing techniques.
