Abstract

In this report, we present a rare case of sclerosing cholangitis in a 9-year-old male child, who was referred to the Children's University Hospital in Damascus with a complaint of jaundice, lower Gastrointestinal bleeding and severe anemia, He had a history of Hepatitis A Infection 9 months prior to presentation, and a family history of Cirrhosis-related deaths among his relatives. clinical examination showed severe pallor with icteric discoloration only in sclerae, and moderate hepatosplenomegaly. He had severe anemia and moderate elevation in liver enzymes. Liver biopsy revealed sclerosing cholangitis, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed Esophageal varices of grade -4 treated by ligation. Inflammatory bowel diseases IBD have been ruled out, and other possible causes that may evoke these symptoms, have been excluded. The patient was discharged in acceptable clinical condition with cholestyramine, phenobarbital and vitamin therapy, and he is periodically reviewed for clinical and laboratory follow-up of hepatic injury and monitoring the development of IBD as well. We have recorded a case of sclerosing cholangitis in a 9-year old boy, which is rare in this age group, and it may be the first case recorded in Syria.
