Abstract

Local governments often classify slums as dirty, messy, and dangerous, and this inevitably leads to demolition recommendations. However, these places are rarely evaluated from the point of view of their residents. This paper uses a field survey to examine this issue within the poor Zagaziganiyeh neighborhood of Lattakia city.

The study generally consists of three parts. The first part includes a review of the most important literature related to slums, the concept of housing satisfaction, the factors influencing it and its study methods, and then a comparative analytical study of three Arab and international experiences dealing with housing satisfaction within slums. Based on these two parts, a system of indicators was proposed. To measure housing satisfaction within poor neighborhoods in general, this system was used in the third part of the study, which included an applied study, and included an assessment of housing satisfaction within the Zagazigani neighborhood in Lattakia city.

The study concluded that the indigenous population has a higher degree of housing satisfaction compared to non-natives, and that the degree of satisfaction with housing characteristics is higher than with regard to services and the community environment. monthly satisfaction score. Children's play areas and solid waste collection also took the lowest degree of satisfaction with services. The research concluded that housing satisfaction should be taken into account before taking any measures to improve urban poverty areas, and the need to take into account the social and economic situation and housing characteristics and conditions in any effort aimed at improving housing conditions within poor neighborhoods. The research also emphasized the importance of conducting an integrated study that combines the physical features of the studied area and housing satisfaction, in order to come up with the best proposals for improving such areas.
