Term of office and vacancies in the Syrian People's Assembly An Analytic Study

Abstract

The People's Assembly shall assume the legislative power in the Syrian Arab Republic، supervise the work of the Ministry، exercise its powers specified in the Constitution، and perform its functions in accordance with the rules of procedure of the Assembly. The term of the People's Assembly shall start from the date of its first meeting and shall end with the expiration of four calendar years.   

The mandate of the People's Assembly shall be extended in the following two cases: 1. A law approved by the Assembly in case of war by an absolute majority of its members. 2. If a new People's Assembly is not elected for any reason whatsoever، the existing Assembly shall continue to hold a meeting until the election of a new Assembly.                                                                             

The membership of a member of the People's Assembly shall be vacant in one of the following cases: 1. Death. Resignation. 3. Loss of one of the nomination conditions. 4. Dropping membership.        

If any member of the People's Assembly vacates for any of the above reasons، the President shall be notified of the vacancy.         

This research examines the duration of membership in the Syrian People's Assembly and its vacancies، as stated in the Syrian Constitution issued in 2012، and The rules of procedure of the Syrian People's Assembly of 2017، with mention of some modern practical applications.
