This research deals with the idea of generating meanings by ancient Arab critics and it means, that the poet extracts a new meaning from a previous meaning. One of its qualities is that it is not innovative and not plagiarized. The research deals with this idea by referring to the types of meanings, and by indicating the emergence of the term in the space of poetic culture. The study also defines the concept of generating of meanings and points to the plight of the modern poets who face this scarcity of meanings. The focus of the research is exploring the mechanisms of generating meanings by ancient critics, whether they mentioned the term or not, covering critics from Ibn Abi Aon (died 322 H) to Ibn Rasheq Al-Qeirwani (died 456 H). The use of the term "generating meaning" involved its mechanisms and the most important critical visions proposed by ancient critics in dealing with this issue.
