This study examines the circumstances under which the Imperial British East Africa Company was established, and its concession to manage and invest the coast of the Zanzibar Sultanate on the East African mainland between the Umbi River and Kibini. It sheds light on the company’s role in the process of building British colonial control in East Africa, and its contributions in various fields that facilitated and later contributed to the emergence of the British East Africa Colony. The study relies on a variety of sources that include the writings of some administrators who served in the company, and contemporary travelers and missionaries who were eyewitnesses to its policy and how it administered that part of East Africa between 1888-1894
