Preparation and characterization of Ternary ceramic composite Al2O3- Y2O3-ZrO2

Abstract

In this work, Ceramic samples of the Al2O3-Y2O3-ZrO2 system were prepared using the powder technology. The chemical composition of the samples were in the hypoeutectic, eutectic and hypereutectic compositions. The XRD phase analysis revealed growth of the phases: YAM(Y4Al2O9), Y0.15Al0.85O1.93(YSZ) and formation of YAlO3(YAP) in the case of hypereutectic composition. The hardness of the hypoeutectic, eutectic and hypereutectic samples treated at 1350(ºC) had increased by 55%, 44% and 130%, respectively. This increment of the hardness could be due to the formed phases by heat treatment at 1350 oC.
