Abstract

 

As Syria’s energy crisis increases and lack of availability of fuel, in addition to its high prices, it became difficult to provide heating and cooling sources,

so we have to look for ways to minimize energy consumption based on structural elements. One of the most important ways is shading buildings, which is the first step of natural building cooling systems. This research aims to study the effect of overhang and wingwall shading devices on energy performance evaluation in Damascus buildings, by using simulation software

TRNSYS. Where the design day for summer months for the east facade, the west facade and the north facade was reached, which is the day when the cooling load is maximum, where this day was July 22nd for east and west facade; and for south facade it was 9th September. In addition, the maximum projection extension for overhang and wingwall was calculated based on horizontal shadow angle and vertical shadow angle, and its impact on cooling and heating was studied. Then the impact of several projections on cooling and heating loads was studied in order to find the optimal projection of overhang and wingwall. The optimal projection extension of wingwall represented by the ratio A/B which was 0.5 for wingwall on the eastern faced, 0.4 for wingwall on the western facade and 0.5 for overhang on the southern facade. After that by using TRNSYS, we studied the impact of the optimal projection extension on the energy required for cooling and heating.
