"Smart concrete and its vital role in saving energy to achieve sustainable architecture" Case study: An administrative building in Qudsaya suburb
Keywords:
Sustainable Architecture, Smart Materials, Smart Concrete, Energy Saving, Reducing Carbon EmissionAbstract
Smart materials form an important part of the modern concept of sustainable architecture, as they enable these materials to improve the efficiency of
energy and resource use in buildings and reduce their negative impact on the environment. Given the environmental challenges facing the world today, the use of smart materials in architecture has become more important than ever. The research reviews the concept of smart materials, especially smart concrete, and its importance in saving energy to achieve sustainable architecture.
The research generally consists of three parts. The first part includes a review of the most important literature related to smart materials, their concept and properties related to them, and the selection of research databases to extract research in the years 2022-2023 related to smart concrete, and then after extracting and selecting relevant research. Its content will be analyzed to determine the types of smart concrete studied in it and the best places for its implementation in the architectural and structural elements of the building. In the third part, based on the results of the analysis, these results will be applied to a local study case (an administrative building in the (Qudsaya Suburb- Damascus Countryside) to determine the amount of energy savings by using appropriate types of smart concrete, whether the energy consumed for lighting, heating and air conditioning, in addition to carbon dioxide emissions.
This research is of great importance in the field of architecture and sustainable construction, as it helps shed light on the importance of using smart materials in architecture, especially smart concrete, and how these materials can contribute to improving the environmental performance of buildings and achieving more sustainability. The research determined the types of smart concrete, and suggested the best places to implement each of its types (architectural and structural building elements), to save energy and activate sustainability. This study also plays an important role in providing valuable information to architects and designers, in order to help them choose the best types of smart concrete and apply them in
current and future projects, thus achieving sustainability in buildings by saving energy.
