The Effectiveness of Aqueous Extract of Cupressus Sempervirens L. In Reducing The Chlorophyll Concentration of Field Marigold Calendula Arvensis L.

Abstract

This research was conducted in the section of Biological Weed Control at the Biological Control Research and Studies Center and at Kharabo Farms in Eastern Ghouta and the Abu Jerash farms in the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering - Damascus University at the beginning of 2024 for study the effectiveness of the aqueous extract of horizontal cypress C. sempervirens leaves at several concentrations (100, 80, 60, 40, 20%). And herbicide glyphosate 360 ​​mg/L (Lancer®) at the recommended concentration on concentration of chlorophyll A and B, total chlorophyll, and the chlorophyll ratio A/B of the wild field marigold weed C. arvensis. The treatment was applied to the experimental plots once and twice with a time difference of 20 days between the two treatments, and the results were taken 15 days after the first spraying and 15 days after the second spraying using a spectrophotometer.

 

The results of the analysis showed that the aqueous extract of cypress leaves at the five concentrations used had a negative and significant effect on both chlorophyll A and B, total chlorophyll, and the chlorophyll ratio A/B compared to the control treated with water only when sprayed with it once. The cypress leaf extract with a concentration of 100% was superior to The rest of the concentrations were the ratio of chlorophyll A and B, the total chlorophyll, and the ratio of chlorophyll A/B when used (1.134, 0.926, 2.06, 1.226 mg/g), respectively, for the studied traits.

The aqueous extract of cypress leaves at a concentration of 100% when treated twice with it on field marigold weed, with a difference of 20 days between the two sprays, was superior to the herbicide glyphosate and to the rest of the extract concentrations. The values ​​of the concentrations of chlorophyll A and B, total chlorophyll, and the chlorophyll ratio A/B were (0.614, 0.59, 1.204, 1.043 mg/g) respectively, while the values ​​of these characteristics when double treated with the general herbicide were (0.976, 0.913, 1.888, 1.069 mg/g) respectively.
